Eighth, Quarter, Half, Ounce: Cannabis Flower Sizes in Grams

How many grams in an eighth, a quarter, a half and an ounce of weed, how Massachusetts labels list net weight, and how flower sizes fit the 2-ounce limit. 21+.

Cannabis flower is sold in a mix of metric and imperial sizes: you'll see "3.5 g" and "eighth" on the same menu, sometimes on the same line. It's an old habit that stuck. This guide translates the common flower sizes into grams, shows where to find net weight on a Massachusetts label, and explains how each size fits the state's two-ounce limit on a single order. It's for adults 21 and over.

Key takeaways

  • Eighth ≈ 3.5 g, quarter ≈ 7 g, half ≈ 14 g, ounce ≈ 28 g. The exact conversions run slightly higher.
  • The label is the source of truth. Massachusetts labels list net weight in both U.S. and metric units.
  • Two ounces per order is the cap for flower, and the same as the public possession limit.
  • Compare price per gram, not just the sticker price, and check the test date.
  • Buy what you'll use while it's fresh, and store it sealed and locked.

Flower sizes at a glance

One ounce is 28.3495 grams. Every common flower size is a fraction of that:

Size Exact weight Typically sold as Fraction of the 2 oz order limit
Gram 1 g 1 g about 1/57
Eighth (1/8 oz) 3.54 g 3.5 g 1/16
Quarter (1/4 oz) 7.09 g 7 g 1/8
Half (1/2 oz) 14.17 g 14 g 1/4
Ounce (1 oz) 28.35 g 28 g 1/2
Two ounces 56.70 g 56 g the full limit

The "typically sold as" column reflects the rounded weights you'll see on most menus. Always read the label for the exact net weight of what you're buying.

Why the eighth is the standard

The eighth is the size many menus are built around, and it's the easiest size to compare across brands. It fits in a small jar and lets you try a product without buying a lot of it. Our flower menu lists weight on every listing.

Where pre-rolls fit

Pre-rolls are measured in grams too, usually as half-gram or one-gram singles, or multi-packs listed by total weight. A pack of five half-gram pre-rolls holds 2.5 g of flower. Infused pre-rolls contain concentrate as well as flower, which changes how they count and how strong they are. The pre-roll buying guide covers the details, or browse pre-rolls.

Reading weight on a Massachusetts label

Under 935 CMR 500.105(5), a flower label must show the net weight in U.S. and metric units, along with the cannabinoid profile, batch number, packaging date and the date of testing. That means you'll see something like "3.5 g / 0.12 oz" rather than just "eighth." If there's ever a mismatch between a menu nickname and the label, trust the label.

The same label tells you the THC content, and weight and potency are separate questions. Two eighths can weigh the same and test very differently. Our THC percentage guide explains what the potency number measures, and the label guide covers every line on the package.

How sizes fit the Massachusetts limits

Chapter 65 of the Acts of 2026 raised the adult possession limit, and the numbers now line up neatly:

  • In public: adults 21+ may possess two ounces or less of marijuana, or the equivalent in marijuana products (M.G.L. c. 94G, § 7).
  • Per delivery order: up to two ounces of flower or the equivalent.
  • At home: up to 10 ounces, and anything over two ounces must be secured in a locked location, according to the CCC.

For other product types, the CCC's April 2026 equivalency order sets what counts as two ounces: 10 grams of active THC in concentrates (including tinctures) or 1,000 milligrams of active THC in edibles. A mixed cart has to fit within the limit when you add everything up. The purchase and possession limits guide shows how that works.

In practice, a single delivery could hold sixteen eighths of flower, or an ounce of flower plus other products up to the equivalent of the second ounce. Keep the whole cart within the limit when you build it.

Choosing a size

There's no right size, only the one that suits how you shop. A few practical considerations:

  • Trying something new? A gram or an eighth lets you try a cultivar or brand without committing to a lot of it.
  • Found a favorite? Larger sizes of the same product are often priced lower per gram, but compare the actual numbers on the menu rather than assuming.
  • Freshness counts. Flower is best kept sealed, cool and dark. The more you buy at once, the longer some of it sits. Check the test date and packaging date on the product page.
  • One delivery a day. State rules allow only one delivery per consumer per residence per calendar day, so build your full order at once.
  • Mind the minimum. Our minimum order is $50, with a $4 delivery fee, and your checkout total shows every tax line.

Price per gram

To compare fairly, divide the price by the grams on the label. A 7 g quarter and two 3.5 g eighths weigh the same, so the per-gram cost tells you which is the better value. The taxes are the same percentage either way: 10.75% state excise, 6.25% sales tax and 3% local tax. The taxes guide explains how they stack.

Storing larger amounts

If you're buying a half or an ounce, storage matters more:

  • Keep flower in its original sealed, child-resistant container, or an airtight jar.
  • Store it somewhere cool and dark, away from heat sources.
  • Lock it up and keep it out of reach of children, pets and anyone under 21. The CCC's guidance is to lock away all cannabis products in childproof packaging, and amounts over two ounces at home have to be in a locked location.

The storage guide covers humidity, jars and child safety in detail.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in an eighth of weed?

An eighth of an ounce is about 3.54 grams. Cannabis is conventionally sold in 3.5-gram eighths, and the net weight printed on a Massachusetts label is the figure to go by.

How many grams are in a quarter, a half and an ounce?

A quarter ounce is about 7.09 grams (sold as 7 g), a half ounce is about 14.17 grams (sold as 14 g) and an ounce is about 28.35 grams (commonly sold as 28 g).

How much flower can I buy in one delivery order in Massachusetts?

Up to two ounces of flower per order, or the equivalent in other products: 10 grams of active THC in concentrates or 1,000 milligrams of active THC in edibles. That's the same as the public possession limit of two ounces.

Does a pre-roll count toward the limit by weight?

Pre-rolls made of flower count by the weight of flower they contain, which is listed on the label. Infused pre-rolls also contain concentrate, so check the label and product page for how they count.

Is a bigger size always a better deal?

Not necessarily. Compare the price per gram and the test date. Flower is best kept sealed, and a bigger jar you won't finish for months may not suit you.
