ID Requirements for Cannabis Delivery in Massachusetts

What ID you need for cannabis delivery in Massachusetts: one-time pre-verification, the 21+ check at your door, who can sign, and what happens if it fails.

Every legal cannabis delivery in Massachusetts comes with two ID checks: one before your first order, and one at your door every time. They're required by state regulations, and they're a big part of what keeps licensed delivery accountable. Here's what ID works, how pre-verification goes, who's allowed to receive an order, and what happens when an ID doesn't pass.

Key takeaways

  • You need a valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID that shows your date of birth, and you must be 21 or older.
  • Your ID is pre-verified once, in person or through a CCC-approved electronic method, before your first delivery.
  • At the door, the driver checks the same ID, your proof of order and your signature.
  • Only the person who placed the order can receive it. No roommates, partners or neighbors.
  • If the ID fails, the order goes back to licensed premises. It can't be left behind.

What ID is accepted for cannabis delivery

Massachusetts delivery rules don't list ID brands. They set a standard: a valid, unexpired government-issued photo identification that bears a date of birth. The CCC's consumer guidance says the same for store purchases: you need a government-issued ID to buy from a Marijuana Retailer in Massachusetts.

The ID has to show that you're 21 or older. State regulations define a "consumer" as a person 21 or older, and delivery to anyone younger is prohibited.

Our checkout lets you choose a driver's license, state ID card, passport or military ID, and whichever you choose has to meet that standard. Whatever you use, use the same ID for pre-verification and at the door, because the driver has to match them.

IDs that will cause problems

  • Expired IDs. The rule says unexpired, and there's no grace period.
  • Paper temporary licenses without a photo. The rule calls for a photo ID, so a paper document without a photo doesn't meet it on its own.
  • A different ID from the one you pre-verified. If you renewed or replaced your license, update it in your account before ordering.
  • Damaged or unreadable IDs, where the photo, date of birth or expiration can't be read.
  • Photos or scans of an ID. The driver has to view your government-issued ID itself, so bring the card.

Step 1: pre-verification (one time)

Before your first delivery, the licensee has to examine and authenticate the ID you plan to show at delivery. Under 935 CMR 500.145, this can happen:

  • In person at a licensed retailer's location, or
  • Through a CCC-approved electronic method, which may include an approved technology platform.

Either way, the business checks that the ID is valid, unexpired and shows a date of birth, that you're the person pictured, and that you're 21 or older. A delivery business may not deliver to anyone who hasn't set up a delivery account through pre-verification.

Here, you verify your ID in checkout before your first order: you upload a clear photo of the front of your ID (a selfie holding it is optional), and our team reviews it before your order goes out. You only do this once while that ID is valid, if you choose to keep it on file.

What information is kept

The regulations limit what a retailer keeps for delivery to five things: your name, date of birth, address, primary phone number and email address. That information may only be used to complete deliveries and must be kept confidential. Retailers can't record extra personal information without your voluntary written permission. Our privacy policy explains how we handle your data.

Step 2: the check at your door (every time)

Before handing over your order, the driver must confirm that the person at the door matches the pre-verified account. The regulation lists three steps:

  1. View the government-issued ID you used for pre-verification.
  2. View your proof of order, generated when you checked out.
  3. Get your signature and check that it matches the photo ID.

This takes about as long as signing for any package. For every step from checkout to dispatch, see how our weed delivery works. Have your ID in hand when the driver arrives, and be at the delivery address yourself. You can't leave instructions for someone else to sign.

Who can receive a cannabis delivery

Only the consumer who ordered the delivery items. The regulations say it plainly: a delivery business may not deliver to any person other than the consumer who placed the order.

That means:

  • A roommate, spouse or partner can't sign for you, even if they're 21+.
  • You can't order for a friend at their address. They need their own account and their own pre-verified ID.
  • Orders can't be left at the door, with a concierge or in a lobby.

The address also has to be a residence: a house, condominium or apartment. Dormitories and other on-campus housing, hotels, motels, B&Bs, federal public housing, shelters and residential programs are excluded. See how cannabis delivery works in Massachusetts for the full address rules.

What happens if your ID doesn't pass

If the driver can't verify your age and identity, because the ID is expired, doesn't match the pre-verified one, the signature doesn't match, or the person who ordered isn't there, the order can't be handed over.

State rules say any delivery item that is undeliverable or refused has to be transported back to the licensed establishment it came from once the driver finishes the other stops on the manifest. Drivers can't hold cannabis overnight, and they can't leave it with someone else.

If that happens, contact us about your order and payment before you try again. Because the rules allow only one delivery per consumer per residence each calendar day, a failed handoff may mean waiting until the next day to try again. Our delivery FAQ also covers what happens if you're not home and who can accept an order.

How to avoid a failed delivery

  • Make sure the name on your account matches your ID exactly.
  • Update your ID in your account as soon as you renew it.
  • Be home for the whole delivery window you chose. Our windows are 12–2pm, 2–4pm, 4–6pm, 6–8pm, 8–10pm and 10–11pm Monday to Saturday; 12–2pm through 8–10pm on Sunday.
  • Keep your phone on so the driver can reach you.
  • Check that your address is a residence in a town where delivery is permitted. See our delivery areas.

Why the rules are this strict

The ID rules keep cannabis away from anyone under 21, and they're how the state holds licensed delivery to the same standard as a store counter. They also protect you: an order tied to a verified account and a signed handoff is hard to divert or misdeliver. Each delivered package is also tracked in the state's seed-to-sale system, the same system behind the package data on our lab results pages. Our explainer on the METRC package tag shows what that tracking looks like.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of ID do I need for cannabis delivery in Massachusetts?

State regulations require a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID that shows your date of birth. It's checked once during pre-verification and again when your order arrives.

Can my roommate or partner accept my cannabis delivery?

No. Massachusetts rules only allow the order to be handed to the consumer who placed it, even if someone else at the address is over 21.

Can I use an expired ID?

No. Pre-verification requires a valid, unexpired ID. If your ID has expired or been replaced, update it in your account before you order.

What happens if my ID doesn't match at the door?

The driver can't hand over the order. Undeliverable or refused items must be returned to the licensed location they came from after the driver's other stops.

Do I need to show ID every time?

Yes. Pre-verification happens once, but the driver checks your ID, your proof of order and your signature at every delivery.
