How ID verification works

Massachusetts rules require every cannabis delivery customer to be 21 or older, and they require us to check your ID before your first delivery and again, in person, every time we deliver. We've made it as quick as we can.

What ID you can use

A valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID that shows your date of birth: a driver's license, a state ID card, a passport or a military ID. The name on the ID needs to match the name on your order. Expired IDs and photos of IDs can't be accepted at the door.

Uploading your ID

You upload a photo of your ID once, before your first delivery:

• at checkout, when we ask for it, or
• in your account at any time, under ID.

We ask for the front and the back of your ID (a passport needs only the photo page). For a quick approval, lay the ID flat on a plain surface in good light, fit all four corners in the frame, and make sure there's no glare over your photo or date of birth. On our website, your browser shrinks each photo and removes hidden photo data, such as location, before it's uploaded.

How the check works

Most IDs are checked automatically. The check reads the printed details, like the ID type, name, date of birth and expiration date, and confirms the ID is valid, unexpired and matches your account. If everything is clear, your ID is approved. If anything is unclear, a trained member of our team looks at it and makes the decision.

You don't have to wait to shop. You can place your order while your ID is being reviewed, but we can't pack it or send it out until your ID is approved. Your ID's status shows in your account and at checkout: pending, approved, rejected or expired.

If your ID can't be approved, we'll tell you why, and you can upload a clearer photo or a different ID from your account. You can still place your order while you do: we hold it until your new photo is approved, and nothing is cancelled.

At your door, every time

Your driver asks to see your physical ID at every delivery, even after your upload is approved. It's a Massachusetts requirement: the driver checks that you're 21 or older, that the ID is valid, and that it matches the name on the order. Our delivery team wears body cameras, and the ID check at your door is recorded on video, as Massachusetts rules require.

If there's no valid ID at the door, or the person there isn't the person who placed the order, the driver can't hand over the order and it goes back with them.

Your privacy

We use your ID only to confirm your age and identity and so your driver can match it at the door. We never use it for marketing and we never sell it. Only the automatic check and staff whose job is to verify IDs can see it, and every time someone opens an ID, it's logged. We delete ID photos after a set period, and you can ask us to delete yours sooner. Our privacy policy has the details.
